Weekly News Roundup: Jun 29 - Jul 5, 2026

This is a backfill for the week of 29 June to 5 July 2026. I wrote it on 12 October 2026. That week brought a change to Virgin Australia's flexible fares and a report about how Qantas may award Status Credits on reward flights.

Virgin Australia opens Fly Ahead to Economy Flex passengers

On 2 July, Virgin Australia announced that passengers on eligible domestic Economy Flex fares could request an earlier flight on the same route and day without holding Velocity status. If Virgin grants the request, there is no change fee or fare difference.

Seat availability and operational limits still apply. You can request Fly Ahead in the Virgin Australia app at least 60 minutes before the earlier flight, or at the airport at least 40 minutes before it. The benefit can include up to three companions on the same booking. It excludes group and team bookings, international flights, and passengers who have already checked in baggage. The issuer's terms also say that a normal change through Manage Booking keeps the usual fare rules.

In the app, flights between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne could move up to two hours earlier. For other eligible domestic routes, the app offered the first available flight before the booked flight. An Economy Flex ticket alone did not guarantee a seat on an earlier flight.

Qantas reward-flight Status Credits may move to a card benefit

On 30 June, Point Hacks reported that Qantas had confirmed a future way for eligible credit card holders to earn Status Credits on Classic Flight Rewards after Points Club retires. Earning Status Credits on eligible reward flights was a Points Club benefit.

The report did not identify the card partner, launch date, or earn rate. Qantas's program page confirms the planned Points Club retirement, but that current page does not establish when the card detail was announced. I would wait for the card's published terms before treating reward-flight Status Credits as a reason to apply.
