Velocity to KrisFlyer: the 1.55:1 transfer, the bonus-window trick, and when it's actually worth it

Transferring Velocity points to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is one of those moves every experienced Australian points collector knows about and almost nobody has written up plainly. The rate is awkward (1.55 of your points for 1 of theirs), the genuinely valuable bit — the bonus-window timing — is widely misunderstood, and most of the time you shouldn't transfer at all.

The transfer rate: 1.55 Velocity points = 1 KrisFlyer mile

The standard rate is 1.55 Velocity points to 1 KrisFlyer mile, with a 5,000-point minimum per transfer and fractions rounded down. This rate has been in place since transfers resumed in July 2022 (they were suspended through the COVID period) and hasn't moved since.

A few things worth knowing before you touch the button:

  • It works in both directions at the same ratio — but read the direction carefully. Going back, it's 1.55 KrisFlyer miles → 1 Velocity point, which is a loss, not a gain. Round-tripping compounds it: 155,000 Velocity → 100,000 KrisFlyer → ~64,500 Velocity. You shed roughly a third each way, so this is not a "park it and move it back later" play.
  • It's effectively one-way in practice. Because of that loss, you transfer to KrisFlyer for a specific redemption, not to store points.
  • Transfers are usually instant — minutes, with a 24-hour outer bound quoted officially. Occasionally the online tool has outages and Singapore Airlines processes it manually, which can take a few days. Don't transfer the night before you want to book.

The bonus-window trick (and the thing everyone gets wrong about it)

The "hidden leverage" people talk about is a transfer bonus — but it's worth being precise about which one, because this is where a lot of advice is simply wrong.

There is no regular bonus on the Velocity → KrisFlyer leg itself. That leg is a flat 1.55:1, all year round.

The bonus that runs on a roughly semi-annual cadence — typically around May and around November — is the credit-card / partner points → Velocity bonus: when you move bank or program points into Velocity, you get an extra 10–20% (auto-transfer offers are often at the higher end). The play the experienced collectors run is a two-step:

  1. Wait for a card → Velocity transfer bonus, then move your bank points into Velocity with the bonus attached.
  2. Then transfer Velocity → KrisFlyer at the fixed 1.55:1.

The bonus effectively lowers your cost basis on the points before they reach KrisFlyer. It is not a KrisFlyer-specific promo, and you can't wait for a "Velocity→KrisFlyer bonus" because that's not a thing that regularly exists.

Practical version: if you know you want KrisFlyer miles, get your points into Velocity during a bonus window, then sit on them in Velocity until you're ready to book — and only then push them across to KrisFlyer.


When KrisFlyer actually beats keeping the points in Velocity

This is the part to be honest about: on a straight cents-per-point basis, transferring loses value.

The independent AFF December 2025 valuations (the same ones we use to estimate profit) put a Velocity point at 1.7¢ and a KrisFlyer mile at 1.5¢. Because you spend 1.55 Velocity points to get one KrisFlyer mile:

1.55 × 1.7¢ = ~2.64¢ spent per KrisFlyer mile acquired — to get something valued, on average, at 1.5¢.

So a transfer only makes sense when a specific KrisFlyer redemption is worth more than ~2.64¢ per mile. (During a card→Velocity bonus, your effective cost basis drops — a 15% bonus brings the per-mile cost down to roughly 2.3¢ — which widens the set of redemptions that clear the bar.)

Premium Singapore Airlines cabins on their own metal routinely clear it. Current KrisFlyer Saver award levels (one-way, SQ-operated, effective 1 November 2025):

Worked examples against typical cash fares:

  • SYD/MEL–SIN in Business (72,000 miles) against a cash fare that routinely lists at A$3,000–5,000+ works out around 4–6¢ per mile — comfortably above the ~2.64¢ hurdle.
  • Perth–SIN in Business (42,500 miles) is one of the most-cited sweet spots: a ~5-hour flight with cash fares often over A$2,000.
  • SYD/MEL–SIN in Suites (98,000 miles) against an A$8,000+ cash fare can exceed 8¢ per mile — when you can find availability.

There's also a structural reason to redeem as a KrisFlyer member rather than through Velocity's own table for Singapore Airlines seats: KrisFlyer's award calendar opens ~355 days out (vs Velocity's shorter window), Singapore Airlines reserves a slice of Saver availability for its own members, and the KrisFlyer waitlist for Saver seats isn't available to Velocity members. So for SQ metal specifically, transferring can unlock seats you simply can't see on the Velocity side.

The expiry trap: don't transfer early

The single biggest mistake is transferring to KrisFlyer too soon.

KrisFlyer miles have a hard 3-year expiry from when each batch is earned. It is not activity-based — earning or spending more miles does not extend the clock on your existing balance (only the top-tier PPS Club is exempt; Elite members can extend for a fee). Velocity points, by contrast, only need account activity once every 24 months to stay alive.

So the moment you transfer, you start a 3-year countdown on miles that were sitting comfortably in Velocity. The rule of thumb: leave the points in Velocity until you've found the award you want, then transfer and book. Transferring "to be ready" is how people watch miles expire unused.

The short version

  • The rate is a fixed 1.55 Velocity : 1 KrisFlyer, 5,000-point minimum, usually instant.

  • Transfer last, not first — KrisFlyer miles expire 3 years from earning, so don't move points until you're ready to book.
