## Frequently asked questions

[What’s a low-rate credit card?](#tab1)

Low-rate credit cards generally have a low ongoing interest rate charged on purchases, known as the ‘purchase rate’. Note there’s also a separate ‘cash advance rate’ (for withdrawing cash from an ATM), which is likely to be higher.

[How can I compare low-rate credit cards?](#tab2)

When you're comparing low-interest-rate credit cards, think about how you'd use the card to decide what's important to you. Consider the key factors, such as purchase rate, cash advance rate (for drawing cash directly), annual card fee, and the number of interest-free days. Also, you may want to consider special offers and tools (such as Westpac's [PartPay](https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/partpay) or [SmartPlan](https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/smartplan) that could help with money management.

[Can I have an additional cardholder?](#tab3)

You can add 1 additional cardholder (16 years or older) at no extra cost. The primary cardholder is liable for all transactions made with either card.

[How does a SmartPlan repayment plan work?](#tab4)

[SmartPlan](https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/smartplan) helps you stay on top of large purchases and balances by breaking them down into regular installments.

**Credit card balance SmartPlan**

Turn any of your outstanding purchase, cash advance or promotional plan (e.g. balance transfer) balances of $200 or more into a SmartPlan. The purchase balance SmartPlan type is currently available at a lower interest rate.

**Large purchase SmartPlan**

Create a large purchase SmartPlan to help you pay off an individual ‘big ticket’ item of $200 or more that you’ve bought on your card in the last 30 days – think purchases such as a flight, hotel bill or even a new fridge. Large purchase SmartPlans are currently available at a lower interest rate. To ensure that your credit card balance does not exceed the credit limit, please consider the amount of the establishment fee indicated when you set up a plan.

[How does Westpac protect me from fraud?](#tab5)

The security of your card and information is extremely important to us. We have a range of security measures in place to ensure that your account is protected, including online. [Westpac Added Online Security](https://www.westpac.com.au/security/how-we-protect-you) provides extra peace of mind when shopping online at participating retailers.

We also have your back if something does go wrong. Our Fraud Money Back Guarantee ensures that customers will be reimbursed for any unauthorised transactions provided that the customer has not contributed to the loss and contacted Westpac promptly.

[Do I need to wait for my physical card to start spending?](#tab6)

No, on top of Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay, you can activate and instantly use your [Digital Card](https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/mobile-wallets/digital-card) in the Westpac App from the moment your account is opened.

Frequently asked questions

What’s a low-rate credit card?

Low-rate credit cards generally have a low ongoing interest rate charged on purchases, known as the ‘purchase rate’. Note there’s also a separate ‘cash advance rate’ (for withdrawing cash from an ATM), which is likely to be higher.

How can I compare low-rate credit cards?

When you're comparing low-interest-rate credit cards, think about how you'd use the card to decide what's important to you. Consider the key factors, such as purchase rate, cash advance rate (for drawing cash directly), annual card fee, and the number of interest-free days. Also, you may want to consider special offers and tools (such as Westpac's PartPay or SmartPlan that could help with money management.

Can I have an additional cardholder?

You can add 1 additional cardholder (16 years or older) at no extra cost. The primary cardholder is liable for all transactions made with either card.

How does a SmartPlan repayment plan work?

SmartPlan helps you stay on top of large purchases and balances by breaking them down into regular installments.

Credit card balance SmartPlan

Turn any of your outstanding purchase, cash advance or promotional plan (e.g. balance transfer) balances of $200 or more into a SmartPlan. The purchase balance SmartPlan type is currently available at a lower interest rate.

Large purchase SmartPlan

Create a large purchase SmartPlan to help you pay off an individual ‘big ticket’ item of $200 or more that you’ve bought on your card in the last 30 days – think purchases such as a flight, hotel bill or even a new fridge. Large purchase SmartPlans are currently available at a lower interest rate. To ensure that your credit card balance does not exceed the credit limit, please consider the amount of the establishment fee indicated when you set up a plan.

How does Westpac protect me from fraud?

The security of your card and information is extremely important to us. We have a range of security measures in place to ensure that your account is protected, including online. Westpac Added Online Security provides extra peace of mind when shopping online at participating retailers.

We also have your back if something does go wrong. Our Fraud Money Back Guarantee ensures that customers will be reimbursed for any unauthorised transactions provided that the customer has not contributed to the loss and contacted Westpac promptly.
