If you've got a rewards credit card, you might have noticed that certain payments—like tax bills or utilities—earn reduced or zero points. That's where Sniip comes in.

What is Sniip?

Sniip is a bill payment app and an authorised BPAY Payer Institution Member. It lets you pay any BPAY bill using your credit card—including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express—and earn full reward points on transactions that would normally be capped or excluded.

Over 160,000 Australians use Sniip to pay bills like ATO tax, council rates, utilities, and insurance with their credit cards.

How Does Sniip Work?

Sniip uses a two-leg transaction system:

  1. You pay Sniip with your credit card (earning full points)
  2. Sniip pays your biller via BPAY to settle your bill

This structure means your credit card issuer sees it as a regular merchant payment rather than a government or utility payment—so you earn full, uncapped points.

Sniip Fee Structure

Here's what you'll pay to use Sniip:

Card Type Fee
Amex Personal 1.29% (incl GST)
Visa/Mastercard/Diners 1.5% (incl GST)
Business payments (Visa/MC) 1.36% (+GST)
ATO payments (Amex) From 1.75% (+GST)
International cards 3%
Bank account Free

Paying from your bank account is completely free—there are no subscription fees or hidden charges.

For more details on Amex fees, check Sniip's Amex fee page.

Is It Worth It?

The real question: is paying the Sniip fee better than just buying points directly?

Example 1: Card earning 1.25 points per dollar

$6,000 ATO bill with Amex at 1.93% fee:

  • Fee: $6,000 × 1.93% = $115.80
  • Points earned: $6,000 × 1.25 = 7,500 points
  • Cost per point: $115.80 ÷ 7,500 = 1.54c per point

Example 2: Card earning 1 point per dollar

$6,000 ATO bill with Amex at 1.93% fee:

  • Fee: $6,000 × 1.93% = $115.80
  • Points earned: $6,000 × 1.0 = 6,000 points
  • Cost per point: $115.80 ÷ 6,000 = 1.93c per point

Compare to buying Qantas points directly

Small purchases via Qantas Points Calculator:

  • 7,000 points = $279 → $279 ÷ 7,000 = 3.99c per point
  • 8,000 points = $313 → $313 ÷ 8,000 = 3.91c per point

Bulk purchases via Qantas:

  • 150,000 points = $3,999 → $3,999 ÷ 150,000 = 2.67c per point
  • During 50% bonus: $3,999 for 225,000 points → $3,999 ÷ 225,000 = 1.78c per point

The verdict

Method Cost per point
Sniip (1.25 pts/$) 1.54c
Sniip (1.0 pts/$) 1.93c
Qantas bulk (50% bonus) 1.78c
Qantas bulk (standard) 2.67c
Qantas small purchase 3.91–3.99c

Sniip beats buying points directly in most scenarios. The only exception is during Qantas 50% bonus promotions on bulk purchases—but those are rare and require $3,999+ upfront.

Sniip also helps when you need to meet minimum spend requirements for a sign-up bonus—the fee earns you points while counting toward your target.

What Bills Can You Pay with Sniip?

Any bill with a BPAY code can be paid through Sniip, including:

  • ATO tax bills (income tax, BAS, superannuation)
  • Council rates
  • Utility bills (electricity, gas, water)
  • Insurance premiums
  • Land tax
  • Rent (if your landlord accepts BPAY)

See Sniip's ATO payment guide for specifics on tax payments.

Tips for Using Sniip

  1. Use the BPAY code, not QR codes – Scanning a biller's QR code may route you through their payment gateway (which might block Amex). Always use the BPAY biller code.

  2. Compare fees vs bonus value – Make sure the fee is less than the value of points you'll earn.

  3. Check if it counts toward minimum spend – If you're working toward a sign-up bonus, Sniip payments typically count as eligible purchases.

  4. Time payments with bonus periods – If your card has a promotional earn rate, maximise big bills during that window.

Bottom Line

Sniip is a useful tool for points enthusiasts who want to earn on bills that normally offer capped or zero rewards. The fees are reasonable—especially for Amex personal cards at 1.29%—and the process is straightforward.

Download the Sniip app, scan your BPAY code, and start earning full points on your bills.
